My Story

IMG_2274

I am Candyce Dunham, a professional performing harpist with many years and hundreds of hours of experience. I have highly respected credentials along with proven studio results and an extensive repertoire of both music and experiences.

Through Purple Harp Productions, I hope to create a connection to the harp for each individual who visits. If you listen to and support the music, watch the harp tutorial videos, purchase the sheet music, or get involved by attending our performances and workshops, THANK YOU! Purple Harp Productions has come to life through my experiences in performing, teaching, and assisting with the building of HARPS!

My journey with music began at a young age as a Suzuki Student in both piano and harp. I have had the good fortune to learn from some of the best teachers including Jane Reed, Jan Bishop, Ruth Inglefield, Julie Buzzelli, Kathleen Bride atThe Eastman School of Music, Delaine Leonard and Carole Bigler through The Suzuki Association. I have incorporated all of their many years of experience to influence my teaching and performing and hope to get to share it with you.
I have won many accolades and awards including top placements in Music Educators Association Competitions, Youth Harp Competitions, American Harp Society Competition, a full scholarship to The Eastman School of Music where I studied Harp Performance, a scholarship from the Suzuki Association of the Americas to attend teacher training, a Fellowship from the Island Institute to teach music to students who live full time on the archipelago east of the coast of Maine, A Met Life Award for Excellence in Teaching, and was the first American Harpist to be invited to teach for the European Suzuki Association. I have completed all levels of Suzuki Harp Teacher Training and also many levels of Suzuki Piano Teacher Training. I have expanded my training to include The Scottish Harp Society for which I have adjudicated competitions and arranged award-winning music.

Most of my students have won awards and scholarships through their harp playing. Many of my students have continued to have harp in their lives. Every student I taught and wrote arrangements for at the Scottish Harp Society competitions took top placements in their levels for many consecutive years. ALL of my students have found joy in playing the HARP! I have had students advance to blossoming careers in both the teaching and entertainment industry. I have also watched students achieve fulfillment through playing just for themselves.
As a proponent for Harp Education, I created ongoing Harp Programs for More Than Music Suzuki Kingston, (Ontario, Canada), Somerset Harp Festival Youth Program (Somerset, NJ) and my own Youth Program, a full community music program for The Island Institute (Rockland, ME) The Swans Island Music Program (Swans Island, ME),The Dunham Harps Ensemble, multi-year winners of the Scottish Harp Society National competitions and my education programs, “Harp for All”™ and PurpleHarp™. I regularly teach at event workshops and master classes for an extensive list of Harp, Irish, Scottish and Folk Music Festivals.

In 1998 I developed the “Harp for All™” program as an initial introduction to playing the harp for anyone and it has grown into a that encourages everyone with a love for harp to enjoy! Currently, I am developing The PurpleHarp™ program, a comprehensive and long-term educational system that includes graded music for Harp Students as pleasing solos while focusing on introducing a new technique in every tune. The PurpleHarp™ program is written to help students AND teachers in their harp journey by giving step-by-step guidance.

In my lifetime, I have performed as a solo artist and with others in orchestras, musicals, operas, bands of all types, ensembles, and touring companies. These experiences have allowed me not only to share the joy of music but also become a more well rounded teacher for a plethora of students and their interests. I have mastered, written, arranged, and performed a full library of competition music, orchestral excerpts, major audition material, full scores to musicals, as well as hours of music for weddings, brunches, dinners, tea parties, wine tastings, Irish & Scottish Tradition events, cultural celebrations and private parties. I am able to perform and teach all of these facets of the harp. I currently have the incredible fortune to perform professionally all over the country-side with my family, The Dublin Harpers.
